JOINT HEATER

OVERVIEW

The HDE paver attached infrared joint heater is being recognized in North America as an excellent, time saving, and economical solution, to a problem that has plagued pavement owners for decades.  Early deterioration leads to costly repairs and replacement of centerline/lane edge longitudinal joints.

Worldwide, there is a major problem with the joint deteriorating very early due to a lack of compaction at the edge. When a lane is paved and compacted, the edge is pushed out instead of down which leaves that outer edge some 4-6% less compacted than the mat. The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) has estimated that a 1% decrease in density can lead to 10% decrease in the life of the pavement. So, your centerline joint falls apart much earlier than it should.

This has been well documented in the industry over the years. What has been challenging is how to solve the problem with deteriorating joints.

Heat Design Equipment Inc. solved this very problem many years ago by developing a paver attached longitudinal joint heater that re-heats the cold uncompacted edge so that it can be recompacted. We have successful customers from Florida to Alaska in the USA, from Newfoundland right across the country to British Columbia, in Canada. Our customers have worked on major highways including I40 in Tennessee and Hwy 401 and 402 in Canada. Also major Army airbase work including Fort Drum in New York and Fort Stewart in Georgia, as well as International airports including Halifax, Quebec City (our first job in 1996), Ottawa, Thunder Bay, Waterloo, Calgary, Vancouver, right across Canada.

PAVER ATTACHMENT

The HDE paver attachment is available in three standard models with an optional Trailer Model

HDE JMH 300-PA - 12’ 300,000 BTU

HDE JMH 400-PA - 16’ 400,000 BTU

HDE JMH 500-PA - 20’ 500,000 BTU

HDE JMH Trailer Model

HDE joint heaters are designed to be expanded depending on paving requirements. Slower paver speeds may require an HDE 300-PA, within 10 minutes it can be changed into a HDE 500-PA for highway paving. After the initial installation the JMH-PA can attach to any brand of paver within 10 minutes, as all electrical and propane connections are quick connect. Each unit is pre-wired for electronic ignition and both manual and automatic modes. When operating on automatic, the heater will switch from operating pressure (35 psi) to low pressure (5 - 10 psi) If there is a delay in the paving operation and the paver has to stop, the unit will switch to low and heat the joint slowly without burning it. When the paving operation commences the heat will switch to operating pressure. The heaters width can be adjusted based on paving width by sliding the heater on the 2” chrome shaft.

The HDE JMH can also be used for longitudinal joint repair to ensure a better watertight joint and prevent accelerated deterioration. It is particularly cost effective when the joint has widened to such an extent, that joint filler will not stay, or when the cracks have spread to the adjacent joint. By reheating the asphalt it can be reworked, asphalt can then be added to fill in any voids in the pavement. This process creates a lasting seamless repair.

PATENTED CARTRIDGE SYSTEM

  • HDE's replaceable ceramic cartridge allows for easy replacement of the heating element.

  • Typical cartridge life is about 1,500 hours, and can be changed in less than 20 minutes.

  • This patented design prevents the heat from transferring to the heater plenum (top), thus extending the life of the heater.

PNEUMATIC TIRE HEATER

Rubber-Tire-Roller-2018-without-propane-

The HDE Rubber Tire Roller Heater was developed to prevent pick-up during rolling operations. The tires are heated with HDE patented infrared heaters. To eliminate overheating of the tires the system monitors the temperature of the front and rear tires using an infrared sensor that is displayed in the operator control console. The system is programmed to start up and shut down at a pre-set temperature. There is a secondary alarm that will notify the operator if the tires become too hot or cold. The ideal operating temperatures are between 95 °C and 115 °C. Each heater has its own ignition system with a safeguard that will automatically shut down the system in the event that the heater goes out or does not ignite. An optional third infrared sensor will measures the temperature of the asphalt mat and can provide feedback to the operator for effective compaction time and for documentation
