The highly efficient infrared heaters can soften 2.5" of surface course asphalt to temperatures of 220°F in 5-10 minutes. This enable scarification, re-leveling and compaction without burning the surface of the asphalt. With up to 16 independent heat zones the operator is able to vary patch sizes by simply turning the heaters off that are not required. This reduces propane costs and time required to complete the repair.
The HDE P1200 & P1600 Asphalt Patcher has been used successfully in northern climates where paving becomes a problem in colder months with ambient temperatures below specifications set out by the agencies. If asphalt cools too quickly before proper compaction, problems such as lack of bond, raveling, non-uniform consolidation and rutting, high moisture penetration and increased cracking may occur. A contractor can avoid costly scheduling delays waiting for paving approval on ambient temperatures, and improve quality by using an HDE 1600 Infrared Asphalt Patcher to per-heat the base asphalt prior to surface course application.
The base model ( HDE P1200 ) is available with a 12.6' x 6.6' (83.2 square feet ) Infrared Heating Panel with up to 12 independent heat zones. With the optional wing system the HDE P1200 can be upgraded to an HDE P1600 which gives you a 16.6' x 6.6 (109.5 square feet ) Infrared Heating Panel with 16 independent heat zones.
HDE's replaceable ceramic cartridge allows for easy replacement of the heating element. Typical cartridge life is about 1,500 hours, and can be changed in less than 20 minutes. This patented design prevents the heat from transferring to the heater plenum (top), thus extending the life of the heater.
HDE's heaters are capable of running at pressures of 5 PSI up to 40 PSI. HDE's unique High/Low system allows the operator to heat the patch with a higher temperature for the first 5 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of low heat. This enables the operator to reduce the fuel usage while the heat is penetrating deeper into the already heated patch.
The C.G.A. approved vaporizer converts liquid propane to vapour gas. Unlike conventional vapour heating systems, our liquid system will not freeze, and can operate on one propane tank at a time, at temperatures of -15°F (-25°C). Operating on liquid propane allows the truck to carry fewer tanks, and allows you to empty a tank completely.
A standard 8.2' x 6.6' heating deck has 10 heaters that can be shut off individually. With all 10 heaters running the machine would cost about $10 - $16/hour. That equals about an average of 2.5 100 pound tanks per day. By controlling the number of heaters that are used and the pressure of the heaters the amount of fuel used can be reduced.
All HDE trailers are equipped with rubber torsion axles.
